Why Provenance Matters

Provenance — the documented history and origin of a cask — can be among the most important factors in determining its attractiveness to a future buyer, bottler or collector.
A cask with clear, unambiguous documentation is easier to sell, transfer or present to a prospective purchaser. A cask with incomplete records or unclear ownership history may face practical difficulties, regardless of the spirit's quality.
The key elements of strong provenance include an identifiable cask number, a clear record of the distillery and distillation date, documentation of ownership arrangements and any transfers, insurance records, and evidence of continuous bonded storage with appropriate warehouse records.
When Cask Club introduces a cask opportunity, provenance review is part of the process. We seek to ensure that the casks we present to members are supported by the documentation required to make future decisions straightforward.
It is worth noting that even strong provenance does not guarantee future value or a straightforward sale. Market conditions, the state of the spirit at the time of any potential transaction, and the interest of potential buyers all remain subject to change.
